Taking Care of Your Thrift Store Finds

I am a thrifter, a DIY junkie, an antique aficionado, and I am proud to admit my home is a direct reflection of that. We’ve got a crazy mix of textures and surfaces that manage to come together in an eclectic look that’s all our own. Many of the items that make our home unique are old items we’ve found and reinvigorated with a good cleaning.

Over the years, I’ve been asked how I manage to find such awesome pieces, and the answer is easy. First, instead of looking at an item as dirty and discarded, I think of it as well loved and passed along. Second, having a brigade of go-to cleaning products you can trust to care for your treasures as much as you do is a must. For me, Pledge® is the brand I’ve grown to depend on to help me clean up my thrift store finds, as well as condition and protect them for years to come.

Today’s Pledge® products help clean, condition, and protect a host of different surfaces, case in point, this mirror frame. It looks like wood doesn’t it? Well, it’s not. No, this is a lovely plastic framed mirror, I’m guessing from the 1960’s. For it I pull out the Pledge® Multi Surface Everyday Cleaner with Glade® Rainshower®.

Cleaning antiques can be challenging here are a few great tips.

This is probably my favorite cleaning product because it's a multi-tasker. It cleans without damaging the finish, still removes dust and allergens, and can be used on wood, laminate, stainless steel, leather, marble, granite, plastic, porcelain, glass and electronics. Look at how it seriously refreshed this little metal globe.

The key is to remember this one simple piece of advice: read the instructions! For many Pledge® products (at least all the ones I use), you’re going to want to spray into a cloth first.

Always apply spray to a rag and not directly onto your antiques!

This antique recliner, and its intricate woodwork and spindles, sits in the middle of our living room. Suffice it to say, it sees more than it’s fair share of messes and dust, and cleaning it with all its pieces can be a chore. Pledge® Lemon Wipes make easy work of jobs like this, quickly cleaning and conditioning with that classic lemon Pledge® scent. They also feature Allergen Trappers® that remove dust and up to 90% of the allergens found within it.

For my everyday cleaning, or those times we pull a piece of furniture out of a dusty garage or closet, I like to use Pledge® Extra Moisturizing Furniture Spray. Just look at how the shine it gave back to this old stool. It’d been hiding it in my teenage son’s room, covered in comic books, before I pulled it out for the toddler to use. A quick wipe down, and it’s not just good as new, but it’s better!
This poor stool was greatly neglected but bounced right back with a good cleaning!

Pledge® helps to make creating a home that is a reflection of your unique personality easy. So, the next time you fall in love with a flea market find don’t be put off by a little bit of dirt. Instead, stop by your local Kroger store and pick up these, and other, Pledge® products. Check out their Facebook page for more inspiration and tips.
