The first year of college is eye-opening in so many ways, but especially when it comes to understanding cost of living. Whether you’re moving into a dorm or apartment, outfitting your new home away from home can get expensive but it is still important. This is where you’ll be studying, entertaining, dining, and living the next few years, it needs to be a place that makes you comfortable and at ease.

For those who start their college careers while living at home, a great way to break from the norm is to give your bedroom a makeover. When you’re searching for affordable furnishings you needn’t look any further than your local Big Lots store.

It's easier than you think to save money on furnishing your college freshman's dorm, apartment, or bedroom!

High school graduates don’t want to hear this, and many of us parents might let out a groan, but the number one way to save money your first year of college is to stay at home. Community colleges offer basic education classes at a much lower rate. My son has decided to go this route, and it has allowing him time to decide on a major and start building a household for his future.

Still, it’s made getting into a college state of mind a little harder so we’ve been refreshing his bedroom and creating a space that feels more like a dorm room or apartment. Recently we made a trip to Big Lots and picked up a few items.

Big Lots is our go-to store for an amazing assortment of quality, back to college items. It doesn’t matter if your outfitting a bedroom, dorm room, or an apartment.

It's easy to find stylish furnishings that are budget friendly! You just have to know where to look.

They’ve got mattresses, small appliances, and a fashionable selection of linens for both bed and bath. While styles and assortment vary by store, all are on trend. Check them out online for even more options.

On this trip we found a chic lamp that helps make his comic posters look more kitsch than kiddish.

Dress up any bedroom with a stylish desk lamp.

We had a hard time picking out a couple throw pillows, but now that they’re on his bed they help the room feel more like a studio apartment.

Throw pillows are a quick and easy way to dress up any dorm room!

By staying at home we’re cutting college costs and also using what we save to get a head start on buying home decor and household supplies for when he does move out. So far one of the biggest money saving items we’ve picked up at Big Lots has been a Black&Decker Brew ’N Go™ Coffeemaker.

I’ve seen my son’s bank statements and pointed out to him how much money he is spending at coffee shops. With this personal coffeemaker we’ve made those frou-frou frappes a special treat and not an everyday expense.

If you want to save money your freshman year of college, buy a coffeemaker!

Let’s keep this conversation going.
